Research residency – Ilana Halperin: The Rock Cycle (Yamaguchi)

NY-born Glasgow-based artist Ilana Halperin has conducted a two week field research residency as part of the 2018 Residence Fellowship Program of Akiyoshidai International Art Village from 16 May – 29 May 2018.

During her AIAV Fellowship, Ilana carried out a period of artistic research focused on the unique karst and mineral landscape of Yamaguchi prefecture. She visited a vast diversity of geological, historical and contemporary sites across Yamaguchi.

Towards the end Ilana in collaboration with Scotland-based Japanese curator Naoko Mabon held a narrative performance lecture. The event highlighted stories from recent projects – from working in high velocity petrifying caves in France, to geothermal work in Iceland and Kyushu, as well as opening up carbonate ideas for further exploration in Yamaguchi.
