The Earth Writes Back: Film, Poetry, Picnic & Bird Walk in Helmsdale

Join us on Saturday 30th from 11am for a day of poetry, film, picnic and coastal bird walk, part of the Highlands & Islands Climate Festival. Hosted by Timespan in Helmsdale. The final activity of the day from 2pm Walk and Talk on Birds with Nina O’Hanlon, a Caithness-based seabird ecologist, is the first research activity of a new birds-derived project We Move As A Murmuration. This is the second part of Coastal Commons: Beyond North Sea Extractivism, a long-term heritage and art programme at Timespan.

11am: Screening of Cáit O’Neill McCullagh’s short films part of New Connections Across the Northern Isles. Filmed across Orkney and Shetland they explore the historic and contemporary cultural expressions of life by the sea.

1pm: Poetry Picnic come along to enjoy a locally and ethically sourced picnic accompanied by poetry written during Cáit’s ecopoetry workshops earlier in the month.

2pm: Walk and Talk on Birds. Join seabird ecologist Nina O’Hanlon on a free walk along Helmsdale coastline as she shares her knowledge about birds, their habitats, ecologies and migration, as well as the effects of bird flu, climate change and pollution. Open to all, wear comfortable outdoor clothes!
